This lavish volume, available again after some years out of print, is the definitive presentation of the best of Klimts exotic, ornate paintings, his dramatic and spontaneous sketches, and of the extraordinary milieu which fostered his gift. The author, who knew Klimt in his last years and is a noted Klimt scholar, uses original sources and a wealth of personal photographs to place Klimt in the context of the society which he both shocked and delighted.

Egon Schiele was defined by the renowned art historian Otto Benesch as "one of the most brilliant draftsmen of all time." Benesch's words capture the fundamental aspect of the artist Schiele, who, like no other expressionist painter, was able to give the line a mark of great vigor and incisiveness. The material presented here, with very few exceptions, is considered unpublished. The sketches by Schiele now published are of exceptional importance, as they represent a sort of preparatory process for the painting: many of the over one hundred drawings, watercolors, and paintings, reproduced in large format and in color, are directly related to the sketches. However, many pages contain quick sketches where the sketch-painting relationships are not recognizable. Noteworthy are the many compositional sketches within frames that were not completed, and especially the landscape studies, a subject that is quite rare in Schiele. Biografie des Antiquars und Kunsthändlers Gustav Nebehay (1881-1935), der im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts in Wien, Leipzig und Berlin tätig war. Nebehay war bekannt für seine Kataloge, die von Carl E. Poeschel gedruckt wurden, und war selbst der Schwager des bekannten Buchbinders Carl Sonntag. Die Kunsthandlung Nebehay arbeitete mit vielen Sammlern, Kunsthistorikern und anderen Kunsthändlern sowie mit verschiedenen österreichischen und deutschen Künstlern und literarischen Persönlichkeiten der frühen 20. Jahrhunderts zusammen. Geschrieben von seinem Sohn, der einige seiner eigenen Erfahrungen im Antiquariatsgeschäft schildert, wie zum Beispiel einen gescheiterten Versuch, ein Manuskript persönlich an die Morgan Library zu verkaufen.
