On rencontre ainsi Luffy, qui parcourt les mers sur une petite barque, et va croiser la route d’un bateau pirate commandé par le capitaine Spiel. Ce dernier a capturé une jeune fille et son oiseau-panda, un animal rare (et donc cher). On y découvre enfin les origines des pouvoirs élastiques de Luffy.
