Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945), il pastore e teologo luterano che fu impiccato per la sua partecipazione alla congiura contro Hitler, è diventato il maestro di tanti uomini che cercano il significato concreto della fede in una società nella quale le vecchie parole del cristianesimo non hanno più la risonanza tradizionale. In un momento infatti in cui le chiese si preoccupano prevalentemente della loro conservazione, i cristiani sono posti "agli inizi del comprendere". Occorre cioè penetrare nuovamente il senso di parole come "riconciliazione e redenzione, rinascita e Spirito Santo, amore dei nemici, croce e risurrezione ... ". Questo volume sviluppa in particolare la "concretezza" della proposta di Bonhoeffer: il nesso tra la storia concreta della sua vita e le posizioni teoriche che man mano Bonhoeffer ha elaborato (G. Ruggieri); la concezione dell'etica come ricerca di quello che Dio chiede agli uomini adesso, sulla base del discorso della montagna, ma anche del fatto che Cristo si è caricato delle colpe degli uomini (E. Feil). Il volume contiene anche uno studio che, per la prima volta, chiarisce in maniera esauriente le circostanze del processo e della morte di Bonhoeffer (Ch.U. Schminck-Gustavus) e un saggio sulla recezione di Bonhoeffer nei cinquant'anni che ci separano dalla sua morte, utilissimo anche come introduzione a una lettura intelligente della sua opera (E. Feil).
