Unter dem NS-Regime wurden alte Rechnungen beglichen, und der Antisemitismus konnte sich ungehindert entfalten, insbesondere gegen die sogenannten Vieh-Juden, die bedeutende Wirtschaftsfaktoren waren. Die dramatische Familiengeschichte der Lucas' zeigt Menschen, die die heraufkommenden Gefahren erkannten, aber dennoch Hoffnungen auf ein Leben in Deutschland hegten, die sich als Illusionen erwiesen.
