Mit seinen unkonventionellen, provokativen Arbeiten prägte Allen Jones (*1937 in Southampton) als einer der Pioniere in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren den Umbruch in der modernen Kunst. Seine berühmten Furniture Sculptures – zu Möbeln umfunktionierte, realistisch anmutende Frauenfiguren aus Fiberglas und Stahl – markieren bis heute die aufsehenerregende und beherzte Abkehr des Künstlers von der intellektuell überladenen, abstrakten Kunst hin zu Trivialität und Echtheit des alltäglichen Lebens. Die weibliche Gestalt, insbesondere ihre Beine, prägten sich als Jones' Leit- und Lieblingsmotiv ins zeitgenössische Gedächtnis ein und deklarieren die Leidenschaft und Erotik zwischen Mann und Frau zum ästhetischen Prinzip. Mit dem menschlichen Körper gelingt Jones die Überwindung des Zweidimensionalen, nach der sein ganzes Œuvre strebt. Tom Wesselmann is a key figure in American Pop Art, alongside notable artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Emerging in the early 1960s, this movement became immensely popular in the post-war art scene. Born in Cincinnati in 1931, Wesselmann began his artistic journey with collages in the 1950s, utilizing found objects and advertising elements. Since the 1980s, he has focused on metal drawings and paintings, crafted from aluminum or sheet metal, often using mechanical or laser techniques. These works capture the ephemeral nature of sketches and drawings in vibrant, three-dimensional forms. This volume showcases around one hundred significant works, many previously unexhibited, representing the entirety of Wesselmann's creative phases. It allows readers to explore and appreciate his artistic evolution comprehensively. Contributions include essays by Marco Livingstone, Jo-anne Birnie Danzker, Tilman Osterwold, and others, discussing various aspects of Wesselmann's work and its context within Pop Art and European art movements. This catalogue accompanies an exhibition tour organized by the Institut Für Kulturaustausch, showcasing Wesselmann's art across eleven major European museums from 1994 to 1997.
