Otto Meyer hat sich mit der Gestalt und der Rolle Kilians bis in seine letzten Lebensjahre beschäftigt, wobei es ihm vor allem darum ging, den Mythos des Frankenmissionars durch das realistische Bild eines irischen Wandermönchs zu ersetzen, der durch seinen moralischen Rigorismus, namentlich in eherechtlicher Hinsicht, in einen unlösbaren Konflikt mit den politischen Herrschaftsträgern im östlichen Vorfeld des Frankenreichs geriet. Die Maßstäbe für diesen Paradigmenwechsel bezog er aus dem Vergleich mit dem Selbstverständnis und den Schicksalen anderer irischer peregrini auf dem Kontinent, namentlich seines älteren Landsmannes Columban.
