Rarement livre d'histoire aura suscité autant de discussions et de polémiques que celui qu'un jeune historien américain, Daniel J. Goldhagen, a consacré à l'Holocauste : Les Bourreaux volontaires de Hitler. Dans cet ouvrage, publié en France en 1997, l'auteur voulait démontrer que le génocide des juifs n'avait pas simplement été l'affaire des hauts dignitaires nazis, mais que le peuple allemand dans sa grande majorité s'en était fait le complice, étant donné sa " mentalité éliminationniste ". Autrement dit, la mécanique administrative n'expliquerait pas tout, et les Allemands ordinaires auraient consenti et volontairement participé au massacre. Si la communauté scientifique dans son ensemble a fortement critiqué la méthode, le simplisme et les jugements adoptés par Goldhagen, Norman Finkelstein et Ruth Birn se livrent, eux, à une véritable contre enquête : reprenant ses thèses, ils en démontrent les faiblesses - défauts de méthode, erreurs, contradictions, incapacité à expliquer comment on passe d'une " mentalité " à un acte de pur sadisme, spécificité (non démontrée) d'un " caractère national allemand ", approche monocausale de l'Holocauste...
