      Stadtwerdung im Zeitraffer

Die Fotografische Langzeitbeobachtung Schlieren 2005–2020 zeigt, wie sich das Schweizer Mittelland entwickelt

The long-term Photographic Observation Schlieren is a notable research project documenting urban development in Switzerland. Over fifteen years, it captured building activity and urbanization processes to illustrate their impact on a typical Swiss suburban community. The focus was on Schlieren, adjacent to Zurich, where the population rose from 13,000 to 20,000 between 2005 and 2020. Photographs were taken at sixty-three locations every two years under consistent conditions, showcasing changes in the spatial dynamics of buildings, streets, and green spaces. Additionally, detailed topical photographs highlight specific elements like store fronts, building entrances, and playgrounds, reflecting the design and aesthetics of these habitats. This two-volume work presents the findings of this extensive research. The Archive volume includes all eight images from each of the sixty-three sites, illustrating the significant transformations Schlieren experienced over the years. The Essays volume pairs these images with in-depth essays that analyze the study’s themes, offering detailed interpretations and interviews from experts across various fields. This project was recognized with the DAM Architectural Book Award 2023.
