The study examines highly skilled migrants, specifically Swiss in Israel and Israelis in Switzerland, focusing on the role of migration in (multi-sited) biographies. Analyzing twelve main protagonists, Hélène Mona Oberlé explores their perceptions, interpretations, and emotional experiences within migration narratives. Three central themes emerge: first, feelings of (non-)belonging to places and groups; second, the interplay of past, present, and future characterized by nostalgia, irritation, and expectation; and third, the concept of “going abroad” as a sense of accomplishment reflected in their stories. The protagonists construct a flexible self that adapts to the realities of globalization, navigating struggles and tensions while forging meaningful connections to specific places and times through various emotions. The study highlights the significance of emotions in migration narratives and the complexities of identity in a globalized context, illustrating how these individuals create a sense of belonging and purpose amidst their diverse experiences.
