When Enae's grandmaman passes away, Enae inherits a surprising diplomatic assignment: to track down a fugitive missing for over 200 years. This task is seen as futile, intended to keep hir busy, but Enae, having never had a true purpose beyond caring for grandmaman, is determined to succeed. Reet, who knows nothing of his biological family, loves his adoptive parents but yearns to understand his identity. He has always felt different, driven by a desire to study the world in unconventional ways. When a political group claims he has ties to a genetically mysterious, long-deceased family, he eagerly embraces the possibility. Qven, designed to be a Presgr translator, faces a crisis as they realize their aspirations diverge from the expected path of serving as an intermediary between humans and the alien Presgr. This realization is deemed unacceptable, but Qven chooses to rebel, seeking a way to belong on their own terms. As a Conclave of various species approaches and a crucial treaty between humans and Presgr hangs in the balance, the fates of Enae, Reet, and Qven intertwine, setting off a series of events with far-reaching consequences across galaxies.
