On Christmas Eve, eighty-five-year-old Miriam Gardiner steps onto the frozen river behind her home, recalling a long-ago love affair. With her mind clouded by dementia, she fails to notice the peril until it’s too late. Was her fall an accident, suicide, or something more sinister? As her fractured family gathers at their Bar Harbor mansion for what they believe is Miriam’s last Christmas, tensions rise. Among the guests are Delphine, Miriam’s insecure granddaughter who adored her, and Adam, the handsome live-in nurse with whom Delphine is secretly involved. Miriam’s children add to the complexity: Nicole, resentful of her caretaker role; Diana, burdened by her deadbeat husband; and Richard, who has long wished for their mother’s demise. The family is thrown into turmoil when they discover that Miriam’s will disinherits her children, leaving everything to Delphine. As her relatives obsess over contesting the will, Delphine begins to notice discrepancies in their stories. Driven by a desire for the truth, she embarks on her own investigation, but soon realizes that the path may lead her onto dangerous, thin ice as well.
