Set amidst the real-world events following the Jacobite rising of 1745, Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Kidnapped" tells the story of David Balfour, who travels to meet his uncle and collect his inheritance after his father's death. Betrayed by his uncle, David is kidnapped by Captain Hoseason of the brig "Covenant," who intends to sell him into slavery in the Carolina Colonies. However, the ship is blown off course and returns to Scotland, where it collides with a small vessel, bringing aboard the Scottish soldier and Jacobite Alan Breck Stewart. With Alan's help, David escapes his captors and becomes embroiled in the struggle between the Scottish Highlanders and the English government. Stranded in the Scottish wilderness, David must fight for his life and seek to reclaim his rightful inheritance. Through the characters of Alan and David, the conflict over Scottish independence from English rule is vividly portrayed.
