Excerpt from the Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases: Classified and Arranged to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition. The first edition of Dr. Roget's Thesaurus was published in 1852, followed by a second edition the next spring. The third edition, released in 1855, was the first to be stereotyped. Since then, the work has been reprinted with minimal changes, leading to the wear of the original plates. In the later years of his life, which ended in September 1869, the author focused on gathering additional words and phrases for an expanded edition he had envisioned but did not complete.
