Der Erzähler heißt Ijon Tichy: der Held der Sterntagebücher setzt hier seine außerirdischen Erkundungen fort. Zunächst betreibt er in der Schweiz Studien im Institut für Geschichtsmaschinen, einer Filiale des Ministeriums für Außerirdische Angelegenheiten. Dort wird mit allen verfügbaren Daten die Geschichte ferner Planeten simuliert. Ausgangspunkt ist Tichys Darstellung des Planeten Entia in der 14. Reise: anscheinend hat Tichy einen Vergnügungsmond, ein kosmisches Disney-Land, mit dem Planeten selbst verwechselt. Während der wichtigsten Reise seiner Laufbahn führt Tichy Gespräche mit Russell, Popper, Feyerabend und Shakespeare, d.h. mit kybernetischen Persönlichkeitskopien auf Kassetten.
