Anselm Kiefer betrachtet Malerei als eine Form der Weltdeutung, deren Zauber in ihrer Vieldeutigkeit liegt. Geboren 1945 in Donaueschingen, zählt er zu den bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen Künstlern. Seine künstlerische Entwicklung umfasst Performance, Malerei und Skulptur, wobei zentrale Themen in seinem Werk die Welt der Religionen und deren Mythen, germanische Sagen und historische Verknüpfungen sowie die jüngste deutsche Geschichte sind. Kiefer thematisiert „Deutschlands Geisteshelden“ und nutzt Materialien der modernen Erinnerung, insbesondere Bücher und Fotografie. Dabei betritt er die Geschichte als Provokateur, stets jedoch mit dem Bewusstsein einer möglichen Mitschuld. Seine Künstlerbücher sammeln und bewahren historische Indizien, die er in seine Biografie projiziert. Bedeutung entsteht oft durch das Zusammenspiel von Bild und Schrift; seine Bildtitel, häufig Zitate von Autoren wie Celan und Bachmann, bewegen sich zwischen Symbolischem und Konkretem. Kunst ist für ihn die Aneignung des Unbegreiflichen und die Aufarbeitung von Lebenswelt-Residuen. Der vorliegende Band begleitet die erste große Ausstellung des Künstlers in Deutschland seit über 10 Jahren und präsentiert zahlreiche neue, bislang unveröffentlichte Werke, die neben klassischen Malerfarben auch Materialien wie Blei, Asche und Schlangenhaut umfassen.

Richard Lindner, a German-born refugee from Nazi oppression who settled in New York, created a deeply disturbing body of work completely at odds with that city's vanguard of the 1950s. A former commercial artist, Lindner drew on personal iconography and his European cultural heritage to fashion bright, bizarre images of imaginary figures. Grotesque children, automaton couples, and denizens of the urban underworld populate his canvases. Often hailed as a precursor of Pop Art, Lindner insisted that his was the art of an outsider, that he was a "man born between generations; between the Dadaists and the more recent generation of Americans." The situation of the emigre inspired Lindner's paintings, which speak to the alienation and moral crises of this century and evoke the absurdity of the human condition. Although best known for his striking images of intimidating femmes fatales, Lindner consistently denied that his art was either erotic or misogynistic in intent. The elusive character of his symbolism presents a challenge to conventional art criticism and historical scholarship.
