Předivo času je jedním z nejúspěšnějších Simakových románů. Jistým způsobem se dotýká Simakových českých předků a tajemství, které je zahaluje (Suttonové připomínají Simaky, protože přišli z východu a protože mají „kostlivce ve skříni"). O evropském dědečkovi, českém sedlákovi z okolí Prahy, není prakticky nic známo – jen to, co John Simak (Cliffordův otec) svým synům prozradil – přišel prý do Ameriky poté, když v rakousko-uherské armádě zabil v souboji muže. Předivo času je bez nadsázky nejpůvabnější sci-fi román o osudu a cestování v čase, jaký kdy byl napsán, autor v něm dokázal sloučit akční pasáže ve stylu „Zlatého věku" s překrásnými popisy přírody, jež v science fiction ještě nikdo nepřekonal. Ocitáme se v časech, kdy je běžný přenos hmoty na mezihvězdné vzdálenosti a cesty časem jsou realitou. Profesor Petr Maxwell se vydal ze Země na výzkumnou misi, ale vlivem nepředvídatelných okolností se dostal na neznámou křišťálovou planetu. Zjistil, že je studnicí vědomostí a znalostí umírající starobylé supercivilizace. Když se vrátil na Zemi, toužil všem oznámit existenci tohoto pokladu, ale s údivem zjistil, že ho nikdo neposlouchá. Všechno totiž ukazovalo na to, že se z expedice vrátil již před měsícem, nepřivezl žádné poznatky a později zahynul při nehodě. Prostě nikdo nevěřil, že profesor Maxwell doopravdy existuje...
