Renzo Piano (*1937 in Genua, Italien) ist schon seit langem einer der international anerkanntesten Architekten- sein bekanntestes Werk ist das Centre Pomipdou in Paris (1971-77); 1998 erhielt er den Pritzker Price – und gehört damit zur Weltspitze. Lange Jahre arbeitete er mit Louis J. Kahn zusammen, später gründete er eine Partnerschaft mit Richard Rogers. Die Monografie dokumentiert mit vielen Abbildungen in höchster Druckqualität Pianos Werk bis zum heutigen Tag in Fotografien, Grundrissen und Plänen. Der Autor Philip Jodidio ist renommierter Autor mehrerer TASCHEN Bücher (Architecture Now-Serie, Building an New Millenium und verschiedene Monografien).

Renzo Piano, 1998 mit dem Pritzker-Preis ausgezeichnet, hat mit dem Bau der Fondation Beyeler in Riehen bei Basel einen Markstein der Museumsarchitektur gesetzt. Das vielbeachtete Gebäude, 'eine in den Naturraum eines Landschaftsparks hineinkomponierte Architektur' (Die Presse), wurde nach nur zwei Jahren erweitert: Im Sommer 2000 war der Anbau abgeschlossen. Aus diesem Anlass erschien 2001 die zweite, überarbeitete Auflage der erstmals 1998 erschienenen Publikation. Sie stellt das Gebäude aus verschiedenen Perspektiven dar: Entwurf und Ausführung, Gebäudetechnik und Konstruktion, Architekturgeschichte und Typologie, Landschaftsarchitektur und Präsentation der Sammlung – ergänzt um die wichtigsten Informationen zur bisherigen Ausstellungspraxis und zum Erweiterungsbau sowie um neue Abbildungen.
