Na druhej strane obetoval týždne tej najintenzívnejšej práce záležitostiam obyčajných ľudí, ak sa ich prípady vyznačovali čímsi zvláštnym alebo dramatickým, čo prebúdzalo jeho predstavivosť a čo bolo výzvou pre jeho mimoriadne schopnosti. Jeho neustále sa šíriaca povesť prinášala so sebou aj čoraz rozsiahlejšiu prax a z detektíva sa stal veľmi zamestnaný človek. Doktor Watson vo svojich zápiskoch uchoval podrobnú dokumentáciu o prípadoch, ktoré spolu riešili, a ako sám otvorene priznáva, z toho obrovského množstva je preňho mimoriadne ťažké vybrať tie, ktoré si zaslúžia zverejnenie. Jeden z detektívov sa votrel do ich zločineckej organizácie a jeho svedectvo na súde priviedlo na popravisko viacerých sprisahancov.
