En savoir plus sur le livre

During the Classical period, three-dimensional representations evolved beyond mere illustrations of objects or bodies, becoming a deliberate means of shaping space, particularly in vase painting and reliefs. However, this development does not relate to the modern concept of "perspective," which emerged during the Renaissance under Arab influence. Archaeological evidence shows a growing interest in three-dimensional representation starting in the early 5th century, peaking towards the century's end. This evolution cannot be attributed solely to Agatharchos of Samos, who had no verifiable impact on existing monuments. The developmental process was neither consistent nor directed. Despite the absence of a cohesive "perspective" throughout Classical Antiquity, including Roman wall painting, the 5th century witnessed the emergence of an autonomous understanding of space in the visual arts. Consequently, the Rich Style, characterized by its "picturesque tendencies," represented not merely a decadent continuation of the High Classical period but marked a significant turning point in the history of Western art.
