The Girl Group Sound, epitomized by iconic acts like The Ronettes, The Shirelles, The Supremes, and The Vandellas, dominated the airwaves in the 1960s, embodying a blend of innocence and rebellion. Hits such as "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "Then He Kissed Me," and "Be My Baby" captured the hearts of teenage rock and roll fans, significantly influencing the evolution of pop music. However, the narrative of the Girl Group Sound intertwines with themes of race and power. Most of the women, predominantly Black and often teenagers during their initial recordings, were managed by an industry that profited from their talent while denying them fair compensation. Despite touring with Civil Rights leaders and performing at early desegregated concerts, many artists were sidelined as musical trends shifted towards the British Invasion of the late '60s. While their contributions are vital to American music history, many of these women remain largely unrecognized. This oral history compiles over 300 hours of interviews with more than ninety subjects, giving voice to those long silenced. It tells a distinctly American coming-of-age story—one of young women navigating artistic success and struggle, while confronting the inequities faced by women of color.
