Der italienische Dichter Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) verfaßte sein "Dekameron" (= Zehntagewerk) unter dem Eindruck der Pest, die 1348/49 weite Teile Europas heimsuchte: Zehn junge Florentiner fliehen vor der Seuche aufs Land und vertreiben sich die Zeit mit Geschichten, vornehmlich solchen, die von der Liebe handeln. Mit dieser Rahmenerzählung schuf Boccaccio eine Form, der sich die abendländische Literatur seitdem immer wieder bediente. Das Werk wurde 1471 zum erstenmal gedruckt und 1472/73 ins Deutsche übertragen. Unsere Auswahl folgt der Übertragung von D.W. Soltau, Leipzig o.J. (ca. 1880).

Donatien-Alphonse-François Marquis de Sade (1740-1814) bekam schon als 23jähriger die erste Gefängnisstrafe wegen ungesetzlicher Exzesse. Insgesamt brachte er 27 Jahre seines Lebens in Haft oder in der Irrenanstalt zu. Hier entstanden auch die meisten seiner Romane, in denen die Abgründe der menschlichen Natur in schonungsloser Weise ausgeleuchtet werden. "Justine" bildet dabei so etwas wie einen roten Faden; in immer neuen Versionen weitet de Sade die Geschichte der verfolgten Unschuld zu monströser Breite aus. Unser Text bietet die Erstfassung, entstanden 1787 in der Bastille, unter Verwendung der Übersetzung von Christian Barth. Die Illustrationen - fast ausschließlich Orgiendarstellungen - stammen aus der zehnbändigen sogenannten "Justine III" (1797).

I progenitori del Boccaccio provenivano da Certaldo in Val d'Elsa, ma suo padre, Boccaccio di Chellino, si trasferì a Firenze da bambino, dove divenne un mercante rispettato e ricoprì cariche pubbliche. La nascita di Giovanni è oggetto di dibattito: alcuni sostengono che sia nato a Parigi nel 1314 da una relazione del padre, mentre altri, come il Salvini, affermano che sia nato a Firenze nel 1313, al Pozzo Toscanelli. Tuttavia, è certo che Giovanni visse a Firenze da piccolo e, all'età di sette anni, mostrò già segni del suo talento poetico con un componimento rudimentale. Per non lasciare inespresso un ingegno così promettente, suo padre decise di farlo studiare con Giovanni da Strada, un insegnante di grande reputazione, dove apprese i principi della grammatica. Giovanni Boccaccio wunderte sich Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts, "dass Frauen so wenig beachtet wurden", und verfasste daraufhin eine Sammlung geistreicher Porträts willensstarker, einflussreicher, zuweilen auch gefährlicher Frauen. Bis zu seinem Tod 1375 überarbeitete Boccaccio immer wieder sein Werk "De mulieribus claris", eine Sammlung von über 100 Porträts berühmter Frauen. Charmant und mit geistreichem Witz stellt er starke Frauen wie Minerva, die Göttin der Weisheit, die Prophetin Carmenta, die Malerin Thamaris, die Rednerin Hortensia und Proba, die Dichterin, vor. Nicht immer sind sie tugendhaft, heilig erst recht nicht, aber ihnen allen ist gemeinsam, dass sie sich durch ihre Tapferkeit, ihre Geisteskräfte und ihre Beharrlichkeit in der Männerwelt durchgesetzt haben – und so sind diese eindrucksvollen Geschichten auch heute noch von großer Aktualität. Für die vorliegende Ausgabe wurden die schönsten Texte ausgewählt und neu übersetzt sowie mit den Holzschnitten der ersten deutschen Ausgabe (1473) illustriert.
