The book presents the processes of de-bordering and re-bordering in Europe with a special focus on state exclaves. It investigates manifestations of togetherness and separateness of territorial units, analyzed from their edges, taking exclaves as examples. Both theoretical considerations and case studies are included. Nine contributions describe Busingen, Campione d'Italia, Ll 'ivia, Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau, Ormidhia, Xylotymbou, Dhekelia Power Station, Sastavci, Dubrovnik, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Kerki, Barkhudarli, Yukhary - Askipara, as well as Artshvashen.

The aim of this publication is to reflect, conceptually and empirically, on border processes in Europe, paying special attention to the most current border-related developments, with a special focus on the processes of de-bordering and re-bordering. As the authors represent different academic centers and specializations, the volume reflects not only diverse perspectives but also has an interdisciplinary character. The book contains eight contributions and is divided into three thematic parts. The first set of chapters analyzes the borders and borderlands of the European Union, especially in the context of the ongoing changes observed in its direct neighborhood. The next group of articles deals with the regional level of border-related processes within the European Union. Finally, the last group of texts investigates border processes at the local level, analyzing border urban structures.

The immigration crisis that affected the European Union and its member states in 2015 and 2016 and manifested itself in the influx of over a million refugees has not only deeply divided Europeans in terms of the proposed response, but also challenged the integration project itself. Control over human movements has become a symbol of national sovereignty and security again, and raised questions about the shape of the Union and structure of its competences. Migration and asylum policies have been confronted with the Schengen provisions and the space of free flow of people undermined by rebordering tendencies. The aim of the presented volume is to investigate the current challenges for the European Union resulting from the immigration crisis, especially with regard to the external and internal borders of the Schengen Area. It contains more general reflections on the problem as well as contributions referring to current member states' views on border protection, boundary (re)fencing and territoriality, alongside historical reflections on the „defender of Europe“ concepts, together with their current manifestations. The authors ventured to investigate the consequences of the crisis for the Schengen Area and the territorial shape of the European project.

Bordering the Other. Mutual Relations of Poland and Germany from a Multidisciplinary Perspective

The acceleration of European integration has led to new practices of commemorating and visualizing borders, highlighting national and regional differences while symbolically defining territories. This analysis focuses on the processes of de-bordering and re-bordering in Europe, particularly through symbols and manifestations of territorial unity and separation. The volume features nine contributions: Thomas Lundén examines religious symbols as landscape markers; Jouni Häkli explores the symbolic meanings of the Pa Gränsen - Rajalla project in Haparanda and Tornio; Jarosław Jańczak studies cross-border governance in Central European twin towns; Heino Nyyssönen analyzes national policy in Hungary; Beata Przybylska-Maszner discusses Lampedusa as a symbol of the 2011 EU border crisis; Dorte Andersen, Anna Gawlewicz, and Carsten Yndigegn investigate the Slovenian-Croatian and Polish-Ukrainian EU external borders; Felix Münch looks at collective memory sites; Adam Szymański questions Europe’s boundaries amid integration; and Krzysztof Senger applies an economic development lens to cross-border cooperation, seeking methods to evaluate its outcomes.
