Antonio Muntadas began exploring television, film and video as far back as the 1970s and is considered one of the worlds first media artists. He has worked with nearly all genres of artists publications, creating an extremely diverse oeuvre that ranges form the artists postcard to net art. He concerns himself with various phenomena of society; a central aspect to his work is the critical analysis of shifts in public and private realms. A native of Barcelona, Muntadas has long been familiar with the phenomenon of abandoned industrial property resulting in part from the collapse of entire branches of industry. In many cities he has examined the resulting processes of re-urbanization and the development towards event culture. In this context he has consistently taken a critical view of the opportunities offered by the nominations of cities as European Cultural Capitals.
