“Intelligent Design and complex problem solving are twined like wife and husband.” In today's competitive global industrial landscape, intelligent systems technology is essential for addressing numerous challenges. The 19th International Conference on Industrial, Engineering & Other Applications of Applied Intelligent Systems (IEA/AIE 2006) emphasizes research methodologies and their practical applications for intelligent problem-solving in real-world contexts. This collection presents 134 selected papers from over 330 submissions, each reviewed by at least two experts. The normal sessions encompass diverse topics, including planning and scheduling, multi-agent systems, fuzzy logic, data mining, genetic algorithms, decision support, expert systems, neural networks, computer vision, speech recognition, machine learning, and knowledge engineering. Additionally, special sessions were organized around bioinformatics, intelligent control systems, and applications of data mining. The conference also featured four invited lectures from distinguished speakers Fausto Giunchiglia, Erik Sandewall, Sylviane Gentil, and Trevor Martin, enriching the discourse on applied intelligent systems.

      Advances in applied artificial intelligence
    • “Intelligent systems are those which produce intelligent offspring.” AI researchers are dedicated to developing robust methods for solving complex real-life challenges. The 18th International Conference on Industrial & Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence & Expert Systems (IEA/AIE 2005) in Bari, Italy showcased significant contributions from scientists around the globe. The Program Committee selected long papers for their comprehensive work and posters for ongoing research, adhering to a strict policy of including only original, unpublished submissions. Out of 271 submitted papers, 116 contributions were chosen, covering topics such as artificial systems, search engines, intelligent interfaces, knowledge discovery, natural language processing, machine learning applications, reasoning technologies, uncertainty management, applied data mining, and knowledge management technologies. These contributions reflect a strong focus on the technological aspects of AI and demonstrate a commitment to consolidating existing theoretical results. The conference also featured two invited lectures by Katharina Morik and Roberto Pieraccini. Many individuals contributed to the conference's success and this volume, with authors showing enthusiasm for applied intelligence research playing a crucial role. The Program Committee members and reviewers are greatly appreciated for their efficient and dedicated efforts.
