This book examines the image and identity of émigré artists from Nazi Germany in Britain between 1933 and 1945, focusing on a neglected area of Exile Studies. It employs methodologies from Exile Studies, History of Art, and Postcolonialism, offering a fresh perspective on this emigration. The study is structured into five chapters: Chapter One introduces the historiography, methodology, and structure. Chapter Two outlines the socio-political patterns of emigration, creating a historical context for the subsequent chapters. Chapter Three analyzes the British perception of refugee artists and their self-representations, highlighting organizations like the Free German League of Culture and institutions founded by émigrés. Chapter Four delves into the works created during internment and those produced for refugee organizations. Chapter Five reflects on the findings through three postcolonial concepts: diaspora communities, the notion of home, and the gendered identity of refugees. An appendix lists émigré artists with biographical details. Key findings reveal that while the artists shared a refugee status, this did not translate into a unified artistic identity; “refugee art” was largely a construct of the British press and organizations. Additionally, the notion that modern art transcended nationality is challenged, as cultural identities in 1930s and 1940s Europe were shaped by nation-state perspectives.

`Overcoming Dictatorships / Überwindung der Diktaturen´ behandelt Prozesse der Trauer, der Erinnerung und Versuche der Überwindung kollektiver Identitätsmuster im ehemaligen Ostblock seit 1989, die auch unsere heutigen politischen Verfasstheiten — Kapitalismus, westliche Demokratie, und Europäische Union — infrage stellen. Die Gemälde, Skulpturen, Installationen, Stiche, Fotografien und Filme sind im Rahmen eines von der EU geförderten Projekts gleichen Titels entstanden. Durch die Förderung war es den beteiligten Künstlern möglich, sich regelmäßig zu treffen und eine gemeinsame Ausstellung vorzubereiten, in der sie 17 ihrer Werke zeigen werden. Diese Ausstellung wird 2008 von Birmingham aus auf eine Tournee durch die Heimatländer der beteiligten Künstler gehen — Deutschland, Italien, Polen, Tschechien, Ungarn und Rumänien. 30 Illustrationen, Künstlerbiografien und eine politisch-kulturelle Zeitleiste machen dieses Buch zu einem nützlichen Nachschlagewerk.

Focusing on artists' theories of constructive space from the early twentieth century, this book introduces 'Spatial Art History' as a methodology that views artworks as dynamic physical entities that shape social interactions. By integrating historical concepts with contemporary theories, it challenges the traditional perception of art as simply reflecting or facilitating societal norms, emphasizing its role in actively producing social contexts.

What is time, what is space and how do they relate to each other? Even to pose these questions is to presume their existence, says Meister Eckhart in his Commentary on Exodus, from where he then develops his own view on the subject. Although far from having become mainstream, his definition of time as presentiality and space as non-categorical creativity had an enormous influence throughout history, particularly in the arts. In this thematic volume the contributors explore the concepts of time and space in Eckhart's thought, situating these historically, philosophically, theologically, and culturally, whilst focusing on their interpretation in art works, particularly by the American-Korean performance and video artist Taery Kim (b. 1988) who refers explicitely to Eckhart. Kim advances the questions 'what is time?' and 'what is space?' as embodied questions in her performances and video installations, thus exploring Eckhart and inquiring into the ways we can think about our relationships, as embodied subjects, to the vagrancies and bindings of time and space now. Drawing together artists, art historians, theologians, and philosophers, as well as building on existing scholarship, this volume provides the first lengthy discussion of spatio-temporality in Eckhart's writings, highlighting Eckhart's relationship to performance art, and the works of Kim.

Diese Monographie stellt einen Autor mit seinem Werk vor, das charakteristisch ist für jene Schriftsteller, die vom Expressionismus kamen, sich der Neuen Sachlichkeit zuwendeten und durch die politischen Umstände in die sogenannte „Innere Emigration“ getrieben wurden. Die Besonderheit von Köppens Werk liegt darin, daß es die Möglichkeit bietet, die für die Weimarer Republik typische Auseinandersetzung von Rundfunk und Literatur von einer spezifischen Warte aus betrachten zu können: während sich etwa Alfred Döblin und Bertolt Brecht als Schriftsteller mit dem neuen Medium auseinandersetzten, war Köppen als Beschäftigter in leitender Funktion beim Rundfunk (und später auch beim Film) schriftstellerisch tätig. Er hast sich weniger theoretisch zu dem neuen Medium geäußert, als vielmehr die durch Film und Funk gegebenen neuen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten sowohl in Funkformen als auch literarisch angewendet. Die große Anzahl der Texte von Edlef Köppen, die zu einem Teil unveröffentlicht sind, zu einem anderen an entlegenen Stellen mühsam ausgegraben werden mußten, erfordern eine gründliche Beschäftigung mit den Quellen auf dem Hintergrund der zeitgenössischen Literatur.
