Der englische Gelehrte Michael Maittaire (1668-1747) war von 1695-99 Lehrer an der Westminster School in London und verfasste in dieser Zeit drei lateinische Tragödien („Der Untergang Trojas“, „Dido“ und „Die Reise in die Unterwelt“), vermutlich für Aufführungen durch seine Schüler. Das von Maittaire selbst verfasste, bearbeitete 'Regieexemplar', mit dem er die Proben leitete, ist im Nachlass Maittaires erhalten und wurde kürzlich in der Oxforder Bodleian Library entdeckt.
