Istanbul is a city that embodies ancient, modern, and future elements, shaped by the intense dynamics of religious, political, economic, and social transformations. It symbolizes the major issues of our time like no other metropolis. Maria Sewcz’s photographs provide a compelling analytical interpretation of the ongoing developments, offering a cross-section of space and time that connects Europe, the Balkans, and the Middle and Far East. The image pairs showcase the city in a state of confrontation: a blend of joy and suspicion, the vibrant chaos of structures, the juxtaposition of ancient ruins with soaring concrete skyscrapers, and the coexistence of wealth and poverty, as well as religion and secularism. Her photographs capture a raw energy that is both captivating and unsettling. Complementing this visual exploration, Monika Rinck’s text offers a poetic interpretation that serves as an independent narrative, enriching the imagery and enhancing the overall experience of the work.

As a young photographer Maria Sewcz created a series of radical photographs of Berlins east side. The Reichstag, Rathaus, Alexanderplatz, Thälmann Memorial and the border with the west marked the limits of her urban topography. Made in 1987, these bold images capture a cold and irreconcilable rage with the status quo at this period of transition. inter esse is a Berlin tale in which recent German history finds expression. Expressed in dynamic movements through constant changes of perspective, the story has no interest in subordinating one individuals perception to so-called historical necessities. Maria Sewcz, born in 1960 and raised in Northern Germany, submitted the portfolio inter esse as her thesis at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig in 1987.

Das Thema Urbanität und das Spannungsverhältnis von Gebautem und Gewachsenem prägen meine künstlerische Arbeit. Ich setze mich intensiv mit Städten auseinander, insbesondere mit Berlin, meinem Lebensmittelpunkt, sowie Metropolen wie Rom, Istanbul und London. Dabei geht es um die fotografische Transformation meiner Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen. Große Städte sind Zentren der Beschleunigung in der Moderne und spiegeln die bedeutenden Themen unserer Zeit wider. Berlin, als Stadt des permanenten Wandels, ist seit den 1980er Jahren der Fokus mehrerer Werkgruppen, beginnend mit „inter esse“ (1985–87) und aktuell „JETZT, BERLIN“ (2013–16–2022). Diese Arbeiten reflektieren meine Lebensumstände und Erfahrungen und sind in sich abgeschlossene Werke, die jeweils einen bestimmten Zeitraum beschreiben. „JETZT, BERLIN“ thematisiert das Phänomen Stadt und fängt den historischen Moment der Stadt ein. In den letzten Jahren hat sich Berlin nicht nur optisch stark verändert; auch ein sozioökonomischer Strukturwandel beeinflusst das Lebensgefühl im Mikroklima, was auch mich betrifft. Jedes Bild repräsentiert einen spezifischen städtischen oder gesellschaftlichen Bereich, wie Stadtansicht, Alltag, Migration, Tourismus und Gentrifizierung.
