Atmospheres are omnipresent and they are frequently used in everyday language. Yet, when do we perceive atmospheres and how can we explore them? The concept of atmosphere extends aesthetics to aisthesis and comprehends perception as a relation bound to the present and with regard to others. In this context, the astonishing atmosphere is identified as a watershed moment when the object of perception becomes the object of discourse. Surveying Benjamin's definitions of aura, one becomes aware of two modes of perception, which are crucial for the understanding of atmospheres. The "atmospheric portfolio", therefore, provides for the possibility to explore the particular features of the phenomenon. It is a collection of studies and research methods, which, on the one hand, reflects on the terms and concepts, and, which, on the other, allows for exemplary experiments of the empirical approaches to the phenomenon.

In this work, a unified approach is presented for the sensitivity analysis of dynamic systems and for the use of sensitivity values in selected applications from the field of control engineering. These applications highlight how sensitivity-based procedures can be employed for designing novel robust and efficient feedforward and feedback control techniques as well as state and parameter estimation approaches. Moreover, optimization and identification tasks can be handled within the same framework. In this context, differential sensitivities represent partial derivatives of the state trajectories of a discrete-time or continuous-time dynamic system with respect to at least one of the following quantities, namely, initial conditions of the state vectors, system parameters, control inputs, and disturbance variables. Using software libraries for algorithmic differentiation, differential sensitivities can be computed for dynamic system models that are either stated as ordinary differential equations, differential-algebraic equations, partial differential equations, or finite-dimensional sets of difference equations. With the help of the computed differential sensitivities, small-signal information can be determined concerning the influence of the above-mentioned quantities on the state trajectories. Besides the use of classical floating point arithmetic, interval arithmetic is made use of when worst-case bounds of selected uncertain parameters are known during design, simulation, and verification stages.

Atmosphäre ist ein Grundphänomen unserer Lebenswirklichkeit. Andreas Rauh untersucht Atmosphäre im begrifflichen Feld der Ästhetik - zunächst in Anlehnung an den Vorgängerbegriff der »Aura« (Walter Benjamin). Er erarbeitet systematisch eine prägnante Atmosphäre-Position im Anschluss an Gernot Böhme und stellt dabei die Vagheit von Atmosphären heraus. Anhand einer erweiterten Wahrnehmungstheorie mit Blick auf die »besondere Atmosphäre« zeigt Rauh, dass sich Atmosphären im Rahmen der qualitativ-empirischen Methode der »Aisthetischen Feldforschung« erschließen lassen, wobei Werke von Gerhard Richter als Untersuchungsobjekt im Mittelpunkt stehen.
