Elytis (1911--1996) remained committed to a vision of poetry that explores the power of language, linking Greece's history and mythology to contemporary realities. His work is celebrated for its lyricism and optimism, capturing Greece's natural beauty while voicing both the contemporary Greek experience and universal human themes. The Collected Poems of Odysseus Elytis, first published in 1997 and translated by Jeffrey Carson and Nikos Sarris, was the first complete collection of his poetry in any language. This landmark volume includes Elytis's early works, influenced by surrealism and nature, his epic poem connecting Greece's Second World War experience to the myth of the eternal hero, and his mature poetry. The expanded edition adds sixty free verse and prose poems from the 1998 posthumous volume From Close By, along with previously omitted song lyrics and a cantata. All translations maintain the elegance and richness of Elytis's lyrical voice.

Maria Nefeli znamená „Marie Mrak“. Obě jména mají mytologické konotace. V mé básni je však Marie mladá žena, současná moderní radikálka. Mé básně obvykle vycházejí z osobní zkušenosti, přesto ale nepopisují přímo žádné skutečné události. Marie Mračná tvoří výjimku. Když jsem dokončil Hodno jest (to bylo před šestnácti lety), potkal jsem tu mladou ženu v reálném životě a okamžitě jsem chtěl napsat něco velmi odlišného od Hodno jest. Proto jsem tuto mladou ženu nechal ve své básni promlouvat a vyjadřovat její vnímání světa, jež je vlastní mladé generaci. Nejsem proti ní, snažím se pochopit její pohled na svět a pohled její generace. Pokouším se jí porozumět tím, že nás oba nechávám mluvit v paralelních monolozích. – Odysseas Elytis Vydání sbírky doprovází dva další texty. První z nich vznikl na základě rozhovoru s Ivarem Ivaskem z roku 1972 a Elytis v něm hovoří o své poezii. Druhý je Elytisovým projevem, který přednesl francouzsky ve Stockholmu u příležitosti udělení Nobelovy ceny za literaturu v roce 1979, již získal rok po vydání poémy Marie Mračná.
