The history of individual seascapes has recently become a vibrant and innovative field of research. Nonetheless, connections between seas (entre mers) and the imagination of lands „beyond the Sea“ (Outre-mer) have only rarely been focused in these contexts. This is precisely the main aim of the present collection of essays, which results from a conference held at Heidelberg University. The individual papers treat various aspects of transmarine connections, their regulation and mental expansion in an Indo-Mediterranean context, which comprises the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, as well as projections of seaways to India on other maritime areas, thus spanning a wide chronological spectrum from Egyptian antiquity to the onset of the Atlantic Age in the sixteenth century.

Er beschreibt die Zeit zwischen 711 (Ende des Westgotischen Reiches) und 1492 (katholische Eroberung Granadas) als ständige Abfolge von Kriegen und Bündnissen, aber auch kulturellen und diplomatischen Beziehungen. Dabei gelingt es ihm eindrucksvoll, die Vielschichtigkeit der verschiedenen Spannungsfelder zu skizzieren und den Leser mit den wichtigsten Fragen dieser Epoche vertraut zu machen.
Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge untersuchen transmediterrane, mittelalterliche Verflechtungen zwischen dem römisch-deutschen Reich und Palästina. Sie fragen ebenso nach den mitteleuropäischen Voraussetzungen für die Kreuzzüge wie nach deren Rückwirkungen auf das Reich. Wer nahm an diesen Unternehmungen teil und welche Motive waren für die unterschiedlichen Teilnehmergruppen maßgebend? Wie wurde die Werbung für die Kreuzzüge vor Ort durchgeführt? Welche Institutionen hielten auf welche Weise die Kreuzzugsbewegung wach? Welche Medien wurden hierbei eingesetzt? Und welche Auswirkungen hatten die Kreuzzüge auf die Herkunftsgebiete ihrer Teilnehmer? Diese und andere Fragen werden von Fachleuten aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen der Mittelalterforschung (Geschichtswissenschaft, Philologien, Kunstgeschichte, Liturgiewissenschaft) untersucht und beantwortet.
