Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

    • After the first act, the Elector loudly exclaimed "Bravo!" - not knowing if he could stay much longer, so the aria and the storm scene had to be performed at the beginning of the second act. Following this, he again expressed his approval in the friendliest manner, laughingly remarking, "One would not think that something so great could be contained in such a small head." This reflects the remarkable creativity and emotional depth of "Idomeneo," an opera that explores themes of duty, sacrifice, and the struggle between personal desire and responsibility. Set in ancient Crete, the story follows King Idomeneo, who, after surviving a storm at sea, vows to sacrifice the first living being he encounters upon his return. This leads to a series of dramatic conflicts involving love, betrayal, and divine intervention, ultimately culminating in a powerful resolution that examines the nature of leadership and the burdens it carries. Mozart's masterful score enhances the emotional and thematic richness of the narrative, making "Idomeneo" a significant work in the operatic canon.

    • Mozart's "Don Giovanni," since its Prague premiere in 1787, has become one of the most performed and beloved operas, rooted in the age-old figure of the "womanizer." The character of the impulsive Don Juan has been a subject of exploration and discussion throughout the ages. The audience's identification with this stage figure contributes to its success. Beyond this, the opera's enduring appeal in performances is attributed to the combination of a sophisticated libretto by Da Ponte and Mozart's distinctive music. This book includes the libretto along with introductory comments by Kurt Pahlen, who provides insights into the musical and dramatic events of the opera, addressing compositional structure and thematic connections. A brief summary of the plot and an overview of the work's genesis place it within the broader context of the composer's oeuvre and biography, offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated introduction.
