Bauherr Cornelis von Schuylenburch und Architekt Daniel Marot beauftragten einige der wichtigsten niederländischen Künstler des 18. Jahrhunderts mit der Innenausstattung. Cornelis van Schuylenburch, ein wohlhabender Würdenträger der Stadt Den Haag, ließ sich zwischen 1715 und 1721 ein Stadtpalais errichten. Nicht nur die Architektur von Daniel Marot im französischen Stil erregte damals Aufsehen, sondern auch das Innere des Palais mit prächtigen Stuckarbeiten und mehr als 30 Gemälden auf Decken, über Türen und Kaminen.
