Mikhaïl Lermontov, souvent appelé "le poète du Caucase", s'impose comme le poète russe le plus important après la mort d'Alexandre Pouchkine. Obwohl noch ganz im Zeichen der Romantik stehend, weist Lermontows Lyrik bereits deutlich auf den französischen Symbolismus eines Baudelaire oder Verlaine voraus. Sämtliche Gedichte wurden meisterlich neu übersetzt von Eric Boerner (* 1965).
