Approaching the Buddhist Path
- 360pages
- 13 heures de lecture
The first volume in a multivolume collection presenting the Dalai Lama’s comprehensive explanation of the Buddhist path—now in paperback! His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been publicly teaching Buddhism for decades. This series collects his presentations of every step of the path to enlightenment, compiled and coauthored by one of his chief Western disciples, the American nun Thubten Chodron. The Buddha wanted his students to investigate, to see for themselves whether what he said was true. As a student of the Buddha, the Dalai Lama promotes the same spirit of investigation, and as the rich tradition of the Buddha makes its way into new lands and cultures, His Holiness has recognized that new approaches are needed to allow seekers in the West to experience the relevance of the liberating message in their own lives. Such an approach cannot assume listeners are free from doubt and already have faith in Buddhism’s basic tenets. The Library of Wisdom and Compassion series, therefore, starts from the universal human wish for happiness and presents the dynamic nature of the mind. This first volume, now in paperback, also provides a wealth of reflections on Buddhist history and fundamentals, contemporary issues, and the Dalai Lama’s own personal experiences. It stands alone as an introduction to Buddhism but also provides a foundation for the systematic illumination of the path in the volumes to come.

For the first time ever, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate His Holiness the Dalai Lama addresses children directly, sharing lessons of peace and compassion, told through stories of his own childhood. In everyday moments from his childhood, young readers begin to see that important lessons are all around us, and they, too, can grow to truly understand them. With simple, powerful text, the Dalai Lama shares the universalist teachings of treating one another with compassion, which Bao Luu illustrates beautifully in vibrant colour. In an increasingly confusing world, The Seed of Compassion offers guidance and encouragement on how we all might bring more kindness to our world.

He then describes the three essential higher trainings in ethical conduct, concentration, and wisdom that are common to all Buddhist traditions, showing us how to live a life free of harm to self or others and how to develop single-pointed concentration and the higher states of concentration available to earnest practitioners. The chapters on wisdom are in-depth teachings on the noble eightfold path and the four establishments of mindfulness for developing greater awareness and understanding of our body, feelings, mind, and other phenomena. Together these topics form the core of Buddhist practice. This is a book to treasure and refer to repeatedly as you begin the path, progress on it, and approach the final goal of nirvana.

Compassion is the guiding principle of the bodhisattvas, those who vow to attain enlightenment in order to liberate all sentient beings from the suffering and confusion of imperfect existence. To this end, they must renounce all self-centered goals and consider only the well-being of others. The bodhisattvas' enemies are the ego, passion, and hatred; their weapons are generosity, patience, perseverance, and wisdom. In Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama is considered to be a living embodiment of this spiritual ideal. His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama presents here a detailed manual of practical philosophy, based on The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicharyavatara), a well-known text of Mahayana Buddhism written by Shantideva. The Dalai Lama explains and amplifies the text, alluding throughout to the experience of daily life and showing how anyone can develop bodhichitta , the wish for perfect enlightenment for the sake of others. This book will surely become a standard manual for all those who wish to make the bodhisattva ideal a living experience.

His precise and eloquent commentary on the "Path of the Bodhisattva," one of the most important teaching texts of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, offers a step-by-step guide to thirty-seven practices designed to help cultivate the spirit of compassion for all life and service to others that is at the heart of Buddhism.
"Courageous Compassion, the sixth volume of the Library of Wisdom and Compassion, continues the Dalai Lama's teachings on the path to awakening. While volume 5, In Praise of Great Compassion, focused on opening our hearts to others and generating the compassion, joy, and fortitude to make our lives meaningful by benefiting them, this volume ventures further to describe buddhahood, the path of no more learning-the premise being that all sentient beings will become fully awakened buddhas. We learn about the ten perfections as well as how śrāvakas, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas progress along the paths of their respective vehicles to ultimate bodhicitta. A sophisticated schema of the five paths (of accumulation, preparation, seeing, meditation, and no more learning) and of the eight and ten grounds of the Fundamental Vehicle and the Bodhisattva Vehicle, respectively, serves as a concise framework for studying a grounds-and-path text in depth. Finally, His Holiness describes the buddha bodies, what buddhas perceive, and the awakening activities of buddas. Throughout, we see how the Dharma is taught in Tibetan Buddhism, in the Pāli tradition, and in Chinese Buddhism"--

In Lhasa, a noble family enjoys a picnic in a park, with women wearing elaborate headdresses adorned with pearls. Folk-opera singers, dressed in costumes and masks, add to the vibrant scene. Tibet, an expansive region comparable in size to the UK, France, and Germany combined, features stunning glaciers and Himalayan peaks alongside fertile plateaux and valleys. This period captures the essence of a society that had remained largely unchanged since the Middle Ages, soon to face severe oppression. The photographs serve as a cherished record of Tibet's true spirit. John Claude White, who served as Political Officer in Sikkim for nearly two decades, extensively documented the border regions of Tibet. His earliest photographs were taken during the British military expedition to Lhasa in 1904, showcasing both the majestic landscapes and intimate glimpses of towns and people. Succeeding White in 1908, Sir Charles Bell became a close friend of the thirteenth Dalai Lama, who sought refuge in India from Chinese pressure. This friendship granted Bell unique access to Tibetan society during his visits in 1921 and 1933. His photographs reveal a rich civilization deeply influenced by monastic religion. Fluent in Tibetan, Bell published numerous scholarly works on Tibetan culture and advocated for its independence, with his photographs and diaries preserved in the British Library.

Beyond Religion : Ethics for a Whole World
- 203pages

In 1999 His Holiness The Dalai Lama published the bestselling Ancient Wisdom: Modern World, which addressed the question of ethics for the new millennium. A decade later, His Holiness enters the contemporary debate about religion vs atheism, and returns to the theme of ethics with a major new work: Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World. In this thought-provoking new book he argues that religion is not a necessity for pursuing a spiritual life. Rather, focusing on tolerance and understanding between religions, as well as tolerance and understanding between believers (of any faith) and non-believers is the way forward. The way to achieve such an approach, he proposes, is through a system of secular ethics grounded in a deep appreciation of our common humanity. Aimed particularly at the general reader, Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World is a modern-day polemic which outlines those ethics he believes should be central to our lives.

He suggests we meditate on our lives, and on the indefiniteness of the time of death. For, though the time of our death is uncertain, death itself is certain... In this empowering and positive book, His Holiness brings new inspiration to a subject that we, in the West, have long ignored to our detriment. It is only by taming our minds and fully facing the end of our lives, that we can fully live in the present moment.

"We can achieve enlightenment only through the practice of meditation; without it there is noway we can transform our minds." - His Holiness the Dalai Lama With extraordinary grace and insight, the dalai Lama shows how Tibetan Buddhist teaching on compassion can be practiced in our daily lives, through simple meditations that relate directly to past and present relationships. While many world religions have mind-transforming or purifying techniques, Buddhists have placed particular emphasis on these pratices for more than 2,000 years. Basing his discussion on a fifteenth- century Buddhist text, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people gives clear, highly accessible explanations of these methods and how they can be incorporated into the busy rhythms of modern life. The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and is the author of two memoirs and several books on Buddhism. Awakening the Mind, Lightening the Heart is the second volume in the Library of Tibet series, which was founded in order to preserve and disseminate the cultural heritage of Tibet. The volumes of the Library will cover Tibetan history and culture, from meditations practices to social history. Volume Editor Donald S. Lopez is Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies at the University of Michigan. John F. Avedon, General Series Editor of the Library, is the author of In Exile from the land of Snows, the definitive history of modern Tibet.

In India, at the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment, it became a well-established tradition for the Dalai Lama to spend several days each year giving teachings to Buddhists from all over the world. Following his teachings, he held informal group discussions with Western students of Buddhism. In these lively exchanges, the Dalai Lama exhibits clear and penetrating insight into issues that are most important to Western students. Some of the topics discussed are: psychology, Christianity, being a practicing Buddhist in the West, spiritual teachers, reincarnation, emptiness, tantra, protector deities, liberation, meditation, compassion, disciplining others, the power of holy places, and retreats.
Realizing the Profound View

"This second of three volumes on emptiness presents the analysis and meditations necessary to realize emptiness by forcefully and completely negating inherent existence. With attention to Candrakīrti's seven-point examination, Nāgārjuna's five-point analysis, and Pāli sūtras, we investigate who or what is the person and if there is an inherently existent I, thereby gaining clarity on two diverse meanings of "self": the person and inherent existence. Not finding the person under ultimate analysis, and having negated inherent existence, it is equally important to establish what does exist-illusion-like dependent arisings-for it is the dependently existing person that carries the karmic seeds from one lifetime to the next. And so we learn the three levels of related dependent arising as noted by Tsongkhapa, as well as His Holiness's way of delineating them, his spectacular explanation of how, for a person who has realized emptiness, emptiness dawns as the meaning of dependent arising, and dependent arising dawns as the meaning of emptiness, which is the culmination of the correct view according to the Prāsaṅgika Mādhyamaka tradition"--
