Laut Belloc beruhte die europäische Gesellschaft zunächst auf einer Sklavenwirtschaft, die sich mit der Ausbreitung des Christentums in eine distributive Wirtschaftsordnung wandelte, in der das Eigentum unter Freien verteilt war. Dieser natürliche Zustand wurde durch die Reformation mit der Einführung des Kapitalismus und der allgemeinen Lohnknechtschaft gewaltsam zerstört. Für die Zukunft sieht Belloc nur zwei Lösungen: Die Rückkehr zur Sklaverei oder zur Freiheit des Eigentums. Seit der Erstveröffentlichung 1912 hat der Sklavenstaat durch Bellocs erstaunlichen Weitblick nur an Brisanz gewonnen. Eine Pflichtlektüre für jeden, der jenseits aller Rechts-Links-Dichotomie nach alternativen Wirtschaftskonzepten sucht.
