Saint Jean Damascène était un moine et prêtre chrétien syrien, célébré comme un polymathe dont les contributions couvraient le droit, la théologie, la philosophie et la musique. Avant son ordination, il a servi comme administrateur en chef du calife musulman à Damas. Ses écrits exposant la foi chrétienne et ses hymnes restent en usage quotidien dans les monastères chrétiens orientaux du monde entier. L'Église catholique le considère comme un Docteur de l'Église, particulièrement reconnu pour ses écrits sur l'Assomption de Marie.
