Eine gründliche Kenntnis der Wurzelkanalmorphologie ist für eine erfolgreiche endodontische Behandlung unerlässlich. Im Laufe der Jahre wurden zahlreiche Wurzelkanalkonfigurationen identifiziert, die zu zahlreichen Klassifizierungen und deren Modifikationen geführt haben. 1969 legten Weine et al.,die erste klinische Klassifikation von mehr als einem Kanalsystem in einer einzigen Wurzel vor, wobei sie die mesiobukkale Wurzel des ersten Molaren des Oberkiefers als Probe verwendeten. Vertucci entwickelte ein Klassifikationssystem für die Kanalanatomie als Typ I bis Typ VIII weiter, dessen Klassifikation allgemein am meisten akzeptiert wird. Zweck der vorliegenden Studie war es, die Wurzelkanalmorphologie des apikalen Drittels der permanenten unteren ersten und zweiten Molaren des Unterkiefers einer indischen Population mit Hilfe der Clearing-Technik zu untersuchen.
