The essays presented here are the outcome of research carried out by members of IFILNOVA (Institute for Philosophy of New University of Lisbon) in 2016. The IFILNOVA Permanent Seminar seeks to show how values are relevant to humans (both socially and individually). This seminar is the ‘place’ where different research will converge towards a unified viewpoint. This includes the discussion of the following questions: What is the philosophical contribution to current affairs and decisions that depend crucially on values? Can philosophy make a difference, namely by bringing practical reason to bear on these affairs and decision? And how to do it? Which are our scientific ‘allies’ in this enterprise; psychology, communication sciences, even sociology and history? This volume shows the connection between practical rationality and values and covers the dimensions ethics, aesthetics and politics.

Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations is arguably one of the most influential books of the 20th century. It threw a new light on the workings of language and mind, contributing significantly to the understanding of human knowledge. Featuring essays by internationally renowned scholars, this book explores the development of Wittgenstein's ideas in the direction of the Investigations. It offers a comprehensive view of some of the most disputable issues in the study of Wittgenstein's masterpiece and reassesses its relevance within contemporary philosophical debate. To what extent is the form of our life fixed, i. e. is there a form of life or forms of life? How does this bear on the nature of experience? These are two Wittgensteinian questions in need of clarification. Wittgenstein on Forms of Life and the Nature of Experience sheds light on a much exploited but rarely analysed topic in Wittgenstein scholarship while addressing central themes of contemporary philosophy. Bringing together essays from some of the leading scholars in the field, the book concentrates on Wittgenstein’s concept of Lebensform(en), and more specifically its evolution in the author’s thought until his death in 1951.

As três últimas décadas do século XX assistiram a um ressurgimento intenso e, até certo ponto, surpreendente da filosofia de Kant, não apenas no terreno mais estritamente académico, em áreas tão diferentes como a filosofa moral e política, a epistemologia ou a estética. Kant irrompeu também no espaço público, a propósito de temas como a paz entre nações, o relativismo cultural versus universalismo dos valores ou as condições universais de comunicação. Não é possível falar de um neo-kantismo, pois, na imensa variedade de autores e obras, não é possível identificar uma estratégia coerente e sistemática. De qualquer modo, este regresso de um «modo de pensar kantiano», explícita ou implicitamente assumido, coloca-nos perante a questão de saber se será hoje possível reconstruir uma racionalidade kantiana, reconhecível como uma actividade basicamente judicativa que se exerce plenamente numa comunidade de sujeitos que desenvolvem a sua faculdade de julgar de forma crítica e reflexiva.António Marques é professor catedrático da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Publicou livros e ensaios, em Portugal e no estrangeiro, sobre história da filosofia e filosofia do conhecimento e da linguagem, havendo-se ocupado, sobretudo, de autores como Kant, Nietzsche e Wittgenstein.
