Celebrating 70 years of excellence, the UBC Faculty of Medicine is recognized globally for its contributions to medical education and health sciences research. This richly illustrated history chronicles its journey from humble beginnings to a leading institution. The book highlights the challenges faced in establishing the Faculty, which began with British Columbia's entry into Confederation in 1871. Initial proposals for a provincial medical school encountered significant obstacles, including the absence of a university until 1915, resulting in an eight-decade wait before the first medical students enrolled. Despite these hurdles, the Faculty achieved numerous milestones, becoming the fourth largest medical undergraduate program in North America. Faculty members have received prestigious awards, including the Nobel Prize. The innovative province-wide, distributed undergraduate and postgraduate program launched in 2004 is a pioneer in Canada, training a new generation of doctors while expanding health education to remote communities. Researchers at the Faculty are making significant strides in areas such as precision health, cancer, brain and mental health, heart and lung health, population health, and chronic diseases, further enhancing the quality of health care and advancing the field of health and life sciences.
