Setkáváme se v něm jen se dvěma postavami, označenými jako „Černý“ a „Bílý“, jež spolu vedou dlouhý rozhovor v zašlém newyorském bytě – a neřeší přitom nic menšího než otázku po smyslu života. „Bílý“, nihilisticky založený profesor humanitních věd, je pevně rozhodnutý spáchat sebevraždu, „Černý“, bývalý kriminálník, jenž díky kdysi nalezené víře v Boha změnil svůj život od základu, se mu jeho úmysl pokouší rozmluvit.
