    • Anglický spisovateľ James Barlow (1921 -1973) pochádza z Birminghamu, cez vojnu slúžil ako delostrelecký inštruktor, potom sa liečil na tuberkulózu a od skončenia vojny až do smrti sa venoval predovšetkým literatúre. Jeho román Parník (1970) je z rodu tzv. tematických románov. Barlow v ňom opisuje pestrú spoločnosť na zaoceánskom parníku počas pokojnej plavby i za tropickej búrky. Okrem cestujúcich najrozličnejšieho veku, záujmov a povolania je na palube posádka: dôstojníci, stewardi, strojníci, lekári a zdravotné sestry, kabaretné speváčky a tanečnice, ale i gigolovia a gangstri - autor ich strhujúco a presvedčivo ukazuje pri plnení každodenných povinností aj pri zábave. Nepíše však len o kratochvíli cestujúcich a o dennom programe posádky, ale aj o bežných starostiach a trampotách, o osobných problémoch a vnútorných krízach jednotlivcov. V centre románu však stojí sama loď, a tak sa poučíme rovnako o technike navigácie ako o obchodnej a administratívnej stránke námornej plavby. Barlowova kniha, určená širokej čitateľskej verejnosti, má teda svoju nespornú poznávaciu hodnotu - zábavnou formou sprostredkúva poznatky, ktoré môžu byť fascinujúce najma pre vnútrozemca, a súčasne podáva kritický obraz situácie v námornej plavbe.
