    Ce théoricien social, juge et écrivain américain fut un critique des fondements philosophiques de la liberté personnelle et du capitalisme. Dans son ouvrage "Sociology for the South", il lança une vive attaque contre Adam Smith, John Locke et Thomas Jefferson, ainsi que contre toute la tradition libérale. Il soutenait que le travail libre et les marchés libres enrichissaient les forts tout en écrasant les faibles. Son œuvre "Cannibals All!" offrait une critique acerbe du système d'"esclavage salarial" prédominant dans le Nord.
