Thomas Hancock

    Thomas Hancock fut un industriel anglais qui fonda l'industrie britannique du caoutchouc. Son intérêt pour le caoutchouc est né du désir de créer des tissus imperméables pour protéger les passagers de ses diligences. Hancock inventa le masticateur, une machine qui déchiquetait les rebuts de caoutchouc, permettant ainsi leur recyclage. Ses machines produisaient une masse de caoutchouc homogène qui pouvait être façonnée et mélangée à d'autres matériaux. En collaboration avec Charles Macintosh, il développa des tissus imperméables pionniers qui menèrent à la création des imperméables modernes.
