In March 1941, Tom Lancaster lives a double life as Alphonse Prideux, a church maintenance man in unoccupied France. Alongside his married girlfriend Emilie and her sister, he is part of a resistance network that prints anti-fascist newspapers and aids the influx of refugees in Marseille. One night, at a nightclub where Emilie performs, he is blackmailed by a French secret service agent into killing a German agent. To protect his network, he reluctantly agrees but soon finds himself on the run with an unfamiliar woman. Meanwhile, Emilie, a renowned singer in Paris, grapples with her abusive husband and manager, Gerard, while entertaining occupying Germans for career advancement and intelligence. Isolated as friends flee the city, she longs for the intimacy of smaller venues and faces suspicion from citizens who see her as a collaborator. Gerard exploits the Nazi presence for profit, raising the question of whether he will ultimately betray her. Unbeknownst to them, they are all pawns in a dangerous game orchestrated by the Germans, a game that could determine the outcome of the war and threaten their lives.
