Anna e Giovanni, lei adolescente taciturna e attonita, lui più piccolo e fragile, escono dal collegio di suore per trascorrere una vacanza in famiglia, nel paese sul mare dove vivono il padre e la matrigna. È un'estate speciale: quella del 1943. L'Italia, fascista ancora per poco, è sospesa tra due guerre e divisa. Si fa largo un pesante malessere, nonostante l'indolenza dei giorni estivi e l'ottimismo spavaldo di chi vuol credere a tutti i costi in una vittoria sempre piú lontana.
