The journey into space is a dangerous one, and although some aspects of space travel seem to be routine it still takes humanity to the limits of what is technically possible. It is an environment that forgives no mistake, and where carelessness usually has fatal consequences. This book records more than a dozen American and Soviet space disasters from 1967 to the present day. Presented are tragic and near tragic missions such as NASA's Gemini 6A and 8, Apollo 1 and 13, the Challenger and Columbia space shuttle disasters, as well as the Soviets' Soyuz 1, 11, and 18-1, and more. The concise and detailed history is presented along with rare photographs, transcripts of mission conversations, as well as detailed timelines.

Cesty do vesmíru budeme asi ještě dlouho považovat za něco mimořádného. Od průkopnického letu Jurije Gagarina a „malého kroku pro člověka, ale velkého skoku pro lidstvo“ amerických astronautů na Měsíci uplynulo už několik dekád, naše přítomnost ve vesmíru ale není ani dnes samozřejmostí. Cílem této knihy je připomenout, že ne všechny výpravy do vesmíru měly hladký průběh a úspěchy byly zaplaceny i lidskými životy. Třináct příběhů s tragickým i šťastným koncem popisuje nehody amerického i sovětského vesmírného programu: požár a smrt astronautů na palubě Apolla 1, tragickou smrt Vladimira Komarova, heroický návrat Apolla 13 na Zemi, udušení sovětských kosmonautů v Sojuzu 11, explozi obou amerických raketoplánů nebo potíže při práci na mezinárodní vesmírné stanici ISS. Seznámíme se s osudy hlavních hrdinů, dějinami dobývání vesmíru na pozadí studené války, ale především s technickými příčinami těchto neštěstí a s úsilím, jak se jim v budoucnu vyhnout. Bez statečných lidí, kteří přišli ve službách vědy a zkoumání kosmu o život, by dnes náš svět totiž vypadal jinak.

Der Weg ins All war und ist steinig und bewegt sich trotz aller scheinbaren Routine noch immer in technischen Grenzbereichen. Wenn dann bei der Zündung von mehreren hundert Tonnen Treibstoff oder bei einer Geschwindigkeit von 27.000 km/h etwas schief geht, dann meistens richtig und vor allem richtig schnell! Und doch gingen manche dieser Unglücke sogar gut aus - man denke an Apollo 13. Die Shuttle-Unglücke der Challenger oder Columbia dagegen, waren von schier unglaublicher Tragik.
