Like the ancient colossus that stood over the harbor of Rhodes, Henry Miller’s The Colossus of Maroussi stands as a seminal classic in travel literature. It has preceded the footsteps of prominent travel writers such as Pico Iyer and Rolf Potts. The book Miller would later cite as his favorite began with a young woman’s seductive description of Greece. Miller headed out with his friend Lawrence Durrell to explore the Grecian countryside: a flock of sheep nearly tramples the two as they lie naked on a beach; the Greek poet Katsmbalis, the “colossus” of Miller’s book, stirs every rooster within earshot of the Acropolis with his own loud crowing; cold hard-boiled eggs are warmed in a village’s single stove, and they stay in hotels that “have seen better days, but which have an aroma of the past.”

A contatto con realtà etniche e culturali diversissime la civiltà romana rappresento un potente elemento di unificazione e di attrazione soprattutto per le classi dirigenti provinciali e nella dimensione della vita urbana. E ciò anche grazie alla sua capacità di adeguarsi alle tradizioni locali o, addirittura, in qualche caso di farle proprie. Il mondo di Roma imperiale propone per la prima volta un racconto sistematico degli elementi costitutivi della civiltà romana, in tutta la sua area di diffusione, dal I secolo a. C. alla caduta dell'impero d'Occidente. L'opera, articolata in tre volumi (I. La formazione; II. Vita urbana e rurale, III. Economia, società e religione), è stata realizzata, sotto la direzione di John Wacher, da una equipe di storici e archeologi che hanno intrecciato strettamente l'indagine delle fonti letterarie con la documentazione di scavo. Ne è testimonianza l'apparato iconografico che, ricchissimo di carte geografiche, comprende anche numerose piante e disegni, a volte ricostruzioni interpretative, che illustrano i principali siti e ritrovamenti archeologici.
