Août 1940. Louis, dix ans, fils d'émigré polonais, partage sa vie entre les corons, le quartier des mineurs de charbon, et le Café des Amis, tenu par madame Jeanne. Il rend de menus services aux clients du café, qu'il entend parler de la guerre, sans vraiment s'en soucier. Mais avec la défaite française, l'occupant nazi et la police comment à arrêter les Juifs. Louis apprend alors par son père qu'il est lui-même juif.
Sismographe de l'esprit et du cœur, l'écrivain allemand Jean Paul (1763-1825) apparaît, dans ces pensées brèves, tour à tour lucide, injuste, amusant, petit-bourgeois, misogyne, percutant, touchant. C'est un écrivain charnel, un artisan organisé qui se méfie de la spéculation. Il ne cache rien, ni du corps ni de l'esprit. La lumière est à ce prix. S'il s'élève parfois à des hauteurs séraphiques à partir des choses de la vie, il sait, pourtant, comme Kleist, que le paradis est verrouillé et qu'il est vain de chercher quelque part derrière le monde une autre entrée, unique et grandiose. L'énigme est à portée de main mais toujours fuyante, la fantaisie de l'écrivain peut nous en rapprocher, jamais nous la révéler complètement.
