      Août 1940. Louis, dix ans, fils d'émigré polonais, partage sa vie entre les corons, le quartier des mineurs de charbon, et le Café des Amis, tenu par madame Jeanne. Il rend de menus services aux clients du café, qu'il entend parler de la guerre, sans vraiment s'en soucier. Mais avec la défaite française, l'occupant nazi et la police comment à arrêter les Juifs. Louis apprend alors par son père qu'il est lui-même juif.
