Tijdens de afwezigheid van zijn chef, vice-questore Patta, heeft Guido Brunetti de leiding over het Venetiaanse politiekorps. Lange tijd heerst er rust in de stad, totdat er op een morgen een knappe jonge vrouw voor de deur van Brunetti's kamer staat. De vrouw, Maria Testa, is geen onbekende voor hem: ze werkte jaren geleden in het verzorgingstehuis waar zijn moeder woonde. Alleen… toen was ze nog non.
