Eline Vere, a sensitive young woman from The Hague's upper class, grapples with societal expectations, love, and her own emotional turmoil. This naturalist masterpiece delves into her psychological journey, revealing the complexities of her relationships against the backdrop of stifling social norms. Behalve drie romans, Eline Vere , Noodlot en Extaze , en een enkel gedicht, schreef Couperus in de periode 1888-1891 ook een aantal kortverhalen. Zes daarvan verschenen in 1892 gebundeld bij uitgeverij L.J. Veen te Amsterdam, onder de titel Eene illuzie . Tijdens Couperus' leven beleefde de bundel één herdruk (1901) en de kortverhalen werden vertaald in het Duits, Frans, Fins, Italiaans en Tsjechisch.
